A First Line or Middle Management Programme
Module 1 – Introduction to Management / The Manager as a Leader
Workshop Aim - To enable participants to understand the qualities, attributes and skills required to be an effective manager and to demonstrate the concept of leadership and the use of motivation in building effective teams
Workshop Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
- Identify the key qualities and attributes that make an effective manager
- Recognise their own strengths & weaknesses
- Identify their key responsibilities as a manager
- Understand what makes a good leader
- Identify how to use appropriate leadership styles
- Motivate their teams effectively
Module 2 – Decision Making, Problem Solving & Delegation
Workshop Aim - To demonstrate methodologies which aid decision making, problem solving and delegation
Workshop Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
- Employ a structured approach to decision making
- Understand the major steps in problem solving
- Identify the what, when, how and who of delegation
- Understand the difference between delegation and abdication
- Understand the links to managing performance
- Identify the impact to staff engagement
Module 3 – The Manager as a Communicator
Workshop Aim - To help participants identify and improve their interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication techniques and manage two way communication
Workshop Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
- Understand the benefits and importance of effective communication and why communication breaks down
- Identify the most effective communication vehicle for the requirements of their audience
- Put messages across in a clear and concise manner
- Use words, tone and body language effectively
- Demonstrate enhanced listening skills
- Understand and demonstrate email etiquette and effective email techniques
- Write effective emails, letters and reports
Module 4 – Recruitment, Selection & Retention
Workshop Aim - To assist participants to successfully recruit and retain staff
Workshop Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
- Understand their role in managing the recruitment and selection process
- Develop the strategies and skills required to ensure successful recruitment
- Demonstrate interview skills using a range of questioning techniques
- Understand the motivators and their role in retaining staff
Module 5 – Assertiveness, Managing Conflicts & Difficult Behaviours
Workshop Aim – To assist participants in understanding and demonstrating the appropriate behaviour to manage difficult situations and the importance of assertivness in the workplace
Workshop Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
- Understand the difference between assertive, aggressive and passive behaviours
- Understand the implications of these behaviours in differing situations
- Recognise their own behaviours
- Demonstrate techniques for becoming more assertive
- Manage difficult people and difficult situations
- Become more confident
Module 6 - Managing Grievance, Disciplinary & Capability
Workshop Aim – To assist participants in proactively managing these key aspects of people management
Workshop Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
- Understand the difference between these three key aspects of management
- Manage their organisations policies and processes
- Understand and demonstrate the ability to achieve the right outcomes for the organisation and staff
- Understand the link to performance management
- Recognise their role in pro active performance management
Module 7 – Appraisals & Performance Management
Workshop Aim – To identify and understand the principles of effective appraisals and the power of performance management
Workshop Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
- Understand their organisations process and benefits of the process
- Plan and prepare for an appraisal
- Assess and review performance
- Set SMART objectives
- Effectively record information and implement follow – up procedure
- Understand the link with performance management
- Identify and demonstrate how to engage staff to boost performance
Module 8 – Coaching, Mentoring & Counselling
Workshop Aim – To identify and understand the principles of effective coaching, mentoring and counselling and the benefits to the workplace
Workshop Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
- Understand the different support processes/ interventions
- Identify the right intervention to use in the right situation
- Understand the benefits of different coaching models
- Plan and prepare for a session
- Assess and set action plans
Module 9 – Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace/ Stress Management
Workshop Aim – To help participants understand the importance and impact of these negative behaviours on staff and the work environment and the best ways to combat stress
Workshops Outcomes – Participants will be able to:
- Understand the company policy on bullying & harassment (if one in place or help develop and implement one if not)
- Identify probable causes for these behaviours
- Understand the impact on others
- Take practical steps to manage the situation
- Manage more effectively to reduce stress levels
- Understand and display techniques to combat stress
Module 10 – Time Management / Programme Evaluation
Workshop Aim - To help participants plan and organise their time more productively and evaluate the impact of the MDP programme
Workshop Outcomes - Participants will be able to:
- Use proactive and creative time management techniques
- Maximise the use of diaries and organisers
- Identify and implement techniques for planning & prioritising
- Manage their own time more productively
- Understand their personal energisers and drainers
- Plan, organise and run effective meetings
- Evaluate the benefits of the MDP
- Demonstrate learning through personal case studies
